Bosch SDS-max Rotary Hammer Price: GBH 5-40 D to GBH 12-52 DV
Four heavy Bosch hammers for 40–52 mm holes and 90–150 mm cores, and how to choose between them.

SDS-max is the heavier of the two Bosch drill-bit fittings. SDS-plus machines — the GBH 220, 2-26 and 2-28 that most people call a hilti machine — stop at 22–32 mm in concrete. Above that, for anchor bolts, sleeves, pipe and duct holes through slabs and walls, you need an SDS-max machine and SDS-max bits. All four below take them.

The four machines
- GBH 5-40 D — ₹44,641. 1,100 W, 8.5 J, 6.8 kg. Best between 18 and 32 mm with drill bits. Bosch call it the entry-level machine of their SDS-max range, compact for hard-to-reach places. Before GST ₹37,832.
- GBH 6-42 C — ₹48,711. 1,300 W, 9 J, 7.7 kg, 3,050–3,150 blows a minute. Bosch describe it as a heavy-duty 2-in-1 for drilling and chiselling concrete. ₹4,070 more than the 5-40 D, with a 100 mm core cutter rating against 90 mm.
- GBH 8-45 DV — ₹81,309. 1,500 W, 12.5 J, 8.9 kg, with Vibration Control. Best between 20 and 40 mm; 80 mm breakthrough bits and 125 mm core cutters. Bosch call it the all-round performer of the range. Before GST ₹68,906.
- GBH 12-52 DV — ₹97,776. 1,700 W, 19 J, 11.9 kg, with Vibration Control. Best between 30 and 50 mm; 150 mm core cutters. Bosch call it the most heavy-duty machine of their SDS-max range, for tough chiselling too. ₹16,467 more than the 8-45 DV.
GBH 5-40 D or GBH 8-45 DV?
The two most compared. The 8-45 DV costs ₹36,668 more and gives you 12.5 J against 8.5 J, Vibration Control, and a much bigger hole: 125 mm with a core cutter against 90 mm, and 80 mm breakthrough bits against 45–55 mm. It weighs 2.1 kg more.
- GBH 5-40 D if most of your holes are 18–32 mm anchors and the odd core up to 90 mm, and the machine is often lifted to a wall or ceiling.
- GBH 8-45 DV if you core 100–125 mm holes for pipes and ducts, drill all day, or your crew complains about vibration.
Do you need SDS-max at all?
If your biggest hole is 32 mm, the SDS-plus GBH 4-32 DFR (900 W, 4.2 J, 4.7 kg, 6–32 mm in concrete) at ₹33,453 is ₹11,188 cheaper than the GBH 5-40 D and takes the SDS-plus bits you may already own. The shank of the bit. SDS-max bits are thicker and for bigger holes; they do not fit an SDS-plus machine, and SDS-plus bits do not fit these four.
